He's not a genius. And no one said he was a fine human being. But he is a musician. A poet. And his work deserves a little respect, irrespective of his personal shenanigans. The concept is this: the world is infinitely bigger than we imagine it is, and we diminish it when we try to describe it. We should, instead, seek to fully experience it and, most importantly, share it.
I'm writing you to
catch you up on places I've been
And you held this letter
you probably got excited, but there's nothing else inside it
didn't have a camera by my side this time
hoping I would see the world through both my eyes
maybe I will tell you all about it when I'm
in the mood to lose my way with words
Today skies are painted colors of a cowboy cliche'
And it's strange how clouds that look like mountains in the sky
are next to mountains anyway
Didn't have a camera by my side this time
Hoping I would see the world through both my eyes
Maybe I will tell you all about it when I'm
in the mood to lose my way
but let me say
You should have seen that sunrise with your own eyes
it brought me back to life
You'll be with me next time I go outside
No more 3x5's
I guess you had to be there
I guess you had to be with me
Today I finally overcame
tryin' to fit the world inside a picture frame
Maybe I will tell you all about it when I'm in the mood to
lose my way but let me say
You should have seen that sunrise with your own eyes
it brought me back to life
You'll be with me next time I go outside
no more 3x5's
just no more 3x5's
Sometimes life is messy. Complex. Different than we hope it would be on occasion. Disappointing. Heartbreaking. Maddeningly slower than I wish, because I'm impatient.
But it's also beautiful. Magical. Humbling. Awe-inspiring. Too fast to stop and take notice.
And that is the point of this: that line -- "Today I finally overcame tryin' to fit the world inside a picture frame" -- resonated. Today I accepted life for what it is, stopped trying to brag about it, and stopped trying to act as if what I have experienced is horrendous. Beauty, love, hurt, hope and pain are all about perspective, of course, but they're all part of the existence of a homo sapien.
So, take stock and give thanks in this moment, today. This moment is all we're given.
